Unique snowmobiles stolen in Revelstoke

Thieves in Revelstoke stole a truck and trailer with some unique snowmobiles belonging to Alpine Motorsports of Salmon Arm.
Revelstoke – thieves target snowmobiles.

An early morning theft netted thieves some very expensive snowmobiles. Sometime between 8:00 p.m., February 12th, 2010 and February 13th, 2010 at 7:00 a.m. a Ford F350 with a sled trailer, carrying 7 sleds, was stolen from behind the Mountianview Motel.
The snowmobiles belonged to Alpine Motorsports from Salmon Arm and they were all newer high performance demo models and included:

Eagle mountain avalanche claims a life.
Revelstoke RCMP.
An avalanche on Eagle Mountain has claimed the life of an Alberta man. On February 14th, 2010 at approx. 4:00 p.m. a party of 8 had been sledding in the eagle pass area when the snow let go, burying the 42 year old from Hussar, Alberta. By the time his friends were able to locate and dig him out, he had succumbed to his injuries.

Snowmobilers urged to be more avalanche aware.

A need for greater avalanche awareness within the snowmobiling community is one of the key findings in the BC Coroner Service’s Death Review Panel report into the deaths of 19 snowmobilers last winter.
In many of the fatalities the panel found the individuals had underestimated avalanche risks when faced with complex terrain and difficult snow conditions.

Sicamous RCMP – Tue Jan 19 09:36:00 PST 2010
Late Monday evening at approximately 10:30 pm, January 18th, 2010, the Sicamous RCMP Detachment responded to a report of a group of snowmobilers being caught in an avalanche in the Queest Mountain area near Sicamous.
The RCMP activated the Shuswap Volunteer Search and Rescue Team, with the rescue effort commencing last night. Provincial Emergency Air assets were in the Interior of the province, with a Comox based CH-149 Cormorant helicopter that had been responding to the earlier reported plane crash near Nelson.

Sledders support mountain caribou recovery.

Snowmobile clubs in the Thompson, Kootenay and Cariboo regions of British Columbia have signed stewardship management agreements with the Province that will support the recovery of the mountain caribou population, announced Environment Minister Barry Penner.
“The new agreements give snowmobiling enthusiasts access to some beautiful mountain terrain for winter recreation yet provide protection to mountain caribou and their habitat,” said Penner. “We have worked in partnership with snowmobile associations to strike a balance to ensure mountain caribou have the space they need.”
