The Olympic Torch came to Salmon Arm today (Jan 27) and it’s hard to remember a time in recent years when an event aroused so much pride, not only in Canada, but also pride in our community. Red-mittened hands waved along the route and folks cheered with all their hearts while the procession wended its way toward City Hall where three thousand smiling faces waited for a glimpse of the Torch.

On November 7, 1885, one Donald A. Smith drove the last spike into the great transcontinental railway that would link British Columbia with eastern Canada. This historic event signaled the end of one era and the beginning of the next for the Canadian Pacific Railway and also for Canada.

Salmon Arm plans fabulous stage show to celebrate Olympic Torch.
For months, the City of Salmon Arm has been planning a spectacular welcome for the Olympic Torch relay team and now all is in place and the exitement is growing by the day.
The event will start at 10am in Spirit Square, City Hall, with the flame arriving at 11:13am.

Sicamous combining Olympic Torch celebration with 1st annual Sicamous “Snow Days”.
Sicamous is planning a weekend to remember, both to celebrate the coming of the Olympic Torch and the 1st Annual Sicamous Snow Days, an event which is hoped to become an annual tradition.
On Friday, January 22, 2010, at 9am, the event-filled weekend begins with an afternoon of snowman building for school children in Finlayson Park.
Revelstoke celebrates the Torch

Mount Revelstoke National Park is the original home of Canada’s oldest ski club, and the only place in Canada where world records in ski-jumping have ever been set. On January 26, Parks Canada and the community of Revelstoke will welcome the Olympic Flame with a celebration of a century of skiing, ski racing, and ski-jumping.
Alan Mason of the Revelstoke Chamber of Commerce spoke about the city’s plans for the Event and he told us that there will be a huge celebration in the downtown area around the Grizzly Plaza, starting between 3:30 and 3:45pm and finishing shortly after 8pm.
BC funds Torch Relay celebrations

Communities receive grants for Torch Relay celebrations.
Communities across the province have received 2010 Olympic Torch Relay Community Grants totalling over $2.86 million, Kevin Krueger, Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts announced today.
“With the Olympic Torch Relay just a few months away, communities across B.C. are preparing to welcome this exciting international event into their neighbourhoods,” said Krueger. “This grants program will enable communities to proudly showcase the very best of their heritage and culture to the world in the lead-up to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.”
