Aglukkaq pushing Senators to restore C-6

Bill C-6, also known as the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, would replace Part I of the 40-year-old Hazardous Products Act. Liberal Senator Joseph Day of New Brunswick, who leads a Senate committee that has been examining the bill, has introduced 16 amendments to it. The amendments must still be voted on by the full Senate, which could occur as early as today (Dec 7).
Meanwhile, federal Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq will be holding a press conference with consumer groups in an effort to pressure senators into rejecting the amendments. Aglukkaq and industry groups like the Canadian Consumer Specialty Products Association (CCSRA) accuse the Senate of being pro-industry and ignoring the health and safety of Canadians. But it appears the opposite is true.

The British Columbia Conservative Party applauds the Federal Government for their unswerving commitment to eliminate the hated and wasteful Long Gun Registry enacted by the Federal Liberal Government in December of 1998.
Bill C-391, a Private Members Bill introduced by Conservative MP Candice Hoeppner, amends the Firearms Act by removing the requirement to register millions of common rifles and shotguns. With a majority vote which crossed party lines, this bill passed second reading on November 4 and will now go to committee for further study.

A tremendous victory for sanity in a world gone crazy happened in the Canadian Senate yesterday.
Liberal Senator Joseph Day from New Brunswick came through for the protection of the unalienable rights, freedoms and liberties of all Canadians during yesterday’s resumed second reading debate on one of the worst federal Canadian bills in history -– Bill C-6, the so-called Consumer Protection Act.
Also our special thanks to another Liberal Senator, Senator Banks for adjourning the debate.

Privacy commissioners urge caution on expanded surveillance plan.
Parliament should take a cautious approach to legislative proposals to create an expanded surveillance regime that would have serious repercussions for privacy rights, say Canada’s privacy guardians.
Privacy commissioners and ombudspersons from across the country issued a joint resolution today urging Parliamentarians to ensure there is a clear and demonstrable need to expand the investigative powers available to law enforcement and national security agencies to acquire digital evidence.

Message from Alexandra Morton in Norway, disease and sea lice are not under control in Norwegian salmon farms and BC stands to lose all.
I have been in Norway for 10 days because 92% of fish farming in British Columbia is Norwegian owned. I have met with many Norwegian scientists, members of the Mainstream and Marine Harvest boards, been to their AGMs, toured the area with fishermen, examined a closed-containment facility, met the Norwegians fighting for their fish and joined a scientific cruise.
