Prior to being elected to the Canadian House of Commons, he was elected mayor of Dawson City, Yukon and Salmon Arm, British Columbia. He was a nominated candidate for both the Yukon Conservative Party and the Reform Party of British Columbia. He ran a trucking enterprise in the Yukon, owned a grocery store, and also worked in business development.
Colin Mayes is the chair of the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development and the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure of the aforementioned committee. He is also a member of the Liaison Committee and the Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs.

Self-employed Canadians can now apply for Employment Insurance.
Effective today, self-employed Canadians can now apply to receive Employment Insurance (EI) special benefits, which are maternity, parental, sickness and compassionate care benefits, on a voluntary basis.
There are approximately 2.6 million self-employed Canadians who have long asked for this support. These hard working Canadians include small business owners, farmers, construction workers, professionals, and those who own a home business, among many others.

Government of Canada invests in key Salmon Arm recreational centre.
Colin Mayes, Member of Parliament for Okanagan-Shuswap, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced today federal funding to strengthen economic opportunities in Salmon Arm. Funding for this investment is being provided under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“Our Government, through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, is taking steps to reduce the effects of the economic slowdown,” said Colin Mayes, Member of Parliament for Okanagan-Shuswap. “The Memorial Arena is an important part of our community. Canada invests in safety with new funding for grade crossing improvements in Squilax.
Colin Mayes, Member of Parliament for Okanagan-Shuswap, today announced that the Government of Canada will provide up to $5,568.00 in new funding to improve safety at the Turtle Valley Road crossing in Squilax, British Columbia.
“There is always a potential for accidents in our communities where roads and railways meet,” said Mayes. “These improvements will make these intersections safer throughout the riding of Okanagan-Shuswap.”
