Jan 22-26, Sicamous –
Sicamous combining Olympic Torch celebration with 1st annual Sicamous “Snow Days”.
Sicamous is planning a weekend to remember, both to celebrate the coming of the Olympic Torch and the 1st Annual Sicamous Snow Days, an event which is hoped to become an annual tradition.
On Friday, January 22, 2010, at 9am, the event-filled weekend begins with an afternoon of snowman building for school children in Finlayson Park.
At 6pm, a Curling Funspiel and Beverage Fest begins at the Curling Rink and will continue until Saturday. At 7pm, Opening Ceremonies and a Junior B Eagles game will be on the ice for “ Hockey Night in Sicamous – A Night To Remember”! The night is dedicated to all local hockey players’ successes.
A Snow Sculpture Contest at Eagle River Secondary will start the day Saturday the 23rd. You can get an entry form at the District of Sicamous office and at schools in the area.
At 11am and 1pm, there will be a guided cross-country ski, planned and conducted by the Shuswap Hut and Trail Alliance at the Eagle River Nature Park. You can participate in or watch curling all day long or see a novice hockey tournament at the Sicamous Rec Centre.
End the day upstairs at the Rec Centre with the Snow Days Dance at 9pm.
Starting at 9am Sunday, the 24th, come out to cheer the Atoms in a minor hockey game and then the Novices at 10:45am. At 12:10pm, you can watch speed skating demos and try out your own expertise on the ice at the clinic to follow, with everyone from 3 years and up welcome.
At 10am, Northway Field, off Larch Ave. will be the venue for the annual Snowarama and snowmobile races. The Eagle River Nature Park will again be the venue for more cross-country skiing at 11am and 1pm.
Monday morning, the 25th at 9am, you can enter the Wii Bowing Tournament at the Seniors Centre. At 7pm, join the crowd at the Red Barn Arts Centre for a Paint It Red Party. To get right into the spirit, raid your closet for whatever red and white clothing you can find.
On Tuesday, January 26th, at 1pm, Parkview School will be hosting an assembly featuring cultural and local performances and the Red Mitten Presentation. Then, turn your attention to Main Street, downtown, next to the Post Office, because that is where all the celebrating will be happening. A Bonfire, horse-and-sleigh rides and hot chocolate will star on the program, starting at 2pm. Visit the tent at Eagle River Secondary School and get free community meal tickets and giveaways, torches and flags to wave as you cheer on the Olympic Torch Relay team.
The Torch will be arriving at approximately 4pm and the ceremony will follow. At 5pm, everyone is welcome to enjoy the community dinner at the Eagle River Secondary School gymnasium. At 6:30pm, after the dinner, come to Finlayson Park for a closing lantern ski and walk in the park and watch the lighting of the snowmen made by the children.
Mayor MacLeod and his wife have generously donated a pair of tickets to the Olympic closing ceremonies, to be won in a draw for all the volunteers who have worked so hard to make this truly a weekend for the Sicamous history books.
