Dec 18, Salmon Arm –
Okanagan College Students’ Union hosting 5th annual free holiday dinner for students and their families on December 18th.
Every year, as the holiday season approaches, students everywhere feel a great deal of financial pressure on top of their usual academic concerns and this year is no different. In fact, this year, with so many cutbacks to higher education, has been much more challenging for students everywhere.
Many students at Okanagan College are away from home and cannot afford to make the trip to share the festivities with their families so, for the 5th year, the Okanagan College Students’ Union is planning a free holiday dinner for students and their families on December 18th.
Complete with turkey and all the trimmings, and even a vegetarian option, as well as lots of fun and good fellowship, the dinner has always, since its beginning, been a popular event on campus. Last year 120 people were served and this year, the students’ union is looking forward to even more. Traditionally, the food has been prepared by the staff and students, but this year, a caterer has been hired.
The students’ union would greatly appreciate the support of the community as they strive to make this a great success. A gift of a door prize or a cash donation will go a long way toward making the event a memorable one.
Perhaps not known to many, is the Student Food Exchange on campus, which allows students to freely take what they need and leave what they can. This program has been extremely successful in helping with their tight budgets. A donation of food or cash is always gratefully received toward this worthwhile endeavor.
Nedine Scott, on staff at the college as well as being a student herself, says, “Supporting the students today makes for a brighter tomorrow for all of us.”
Individuals and businesses who would like to assist would be very welcome to contact Nedine at 250-832-2126, Ext. 8229 or mail to: Okanagan College Students’ Union Salmon Arm, 2552 Trans Canada Hwy NE, Salmon Arm BC, V1E 4N3.
Students who are planning to attend the holiday dinner are asked to stop in to see Nedine in her office.
