Campus of care reopens for Vernon seniors.
Creekside Landing, a newly renovated campus of care consisting of 38 assisted living units and 70 residential care beds, reopened its doors for seniors in Vernon.
“Our government is committed to supporting housing solutions that make sense for seniors as their care needs change,” said Eric Foster, MLA for Vernon-Monashee. “Creekside Landing will allow seniors to maintain their independence while receiving the personal care they need, close to their family and friends.”
Of the 38 assisted living units at Creekside Landing, 24 are funded through Independent Living BC (ILBC), an innovative housing-for-health program for seniors. ILBC offers a middle option between home care and residential care for those who need some assistance, but do not need 24-hour professional nursing care. Assisted living units are self-contained apartments where tenants receive a range of hospitality services including meals, housekeeping, laundry, personal care services and medication assistance.
The campus of care model offers a range of housing and care options in one location, from independent housing to assisted living and complex care. Campuses of care minimize the transition for seniors when their care needs change. Aging in place allows couples, family members and friends to remain on the same site when their levels of care are different. The Interior Health Authority funds personal care services and hospitality services for the assisted living units and funds 66 of the residential care beds. The remaining four residential care beds are private pay beds.
“The goal of assisted living and developments like this is to promote greater independence for our seniors and to support their long-term care needs,” said Norman Embree, Interior Health Board chair. “Creekside Landing is an important part of our overall strategy to provide different combinations of housing and personal care options for seniors in Vernon and throughout the Interior Region.”
“Seniors are a vibrant and active part of Vernon, and the community welcomes a development such as Creekside Landing as it provides an excellent housing and care alternative,” said Mayor Wayne Lippert, City of Vernon.
Creekside Landing Ltd. owns and operates the development. The organization is a sister company of Kaigo Retirement Communities Ltd., an established provider of seniors’ housing and care services in the Okanagan.
“Creekside Landing provides this community with 108 homes for its citizens,” said Kevin Svoboda, owner of Creekside Landing Ltd. “We also have residential care beds for young adults with disabilities, making this development an innovative and progressive model of housing and care. We’re pleased to welcome its new residents.”
In 2008, the provincial government met its commitment to provide 5,000 net-new residential care beds, assisted living units, supportive housing and home support. The Province has opened 5,896 additional new beds and units across B.C. since 2001. In total, 12,435 new and replacement beds and units have been opened, replacing many that were old and unsuitable.
In 2009-10, the Province’s budget for social housing is approximately $450 million, more than three times as much as in 2001.
