September 25, Salmon Arm –
The highly popular award-winning group Sweatshop Union is coming back to Salmon Arm Friday September 25. They will be performing ar Club 351, 351 Hudson Street and you won’t want to miss this exciting event!
The hip hop group known as Sweatshop Union had its beginnings in 2000 when four socially-conscious Vancouver rap acts pooled their resources, blending their individual sounds to produce a powerful, unique and highly energetic voice. They are comprised of four rap acts – Dirty Circus, Creative Minds, Innocent Bystanders and solo artist Kyprios.
The group published their first album in 2001 and have since become known not only for their sound but also their honest and insightful comment on sensitive political issues such as the Iraq war, the condition of the world’s poverty-stricken and many more. Their own lives as well as their music reflect a positive attitude in spite of the nature of their message.
In 2002 they began touring North America with other rap and hip hop artists and in 2004 were nominated for a Juno Award for their album Natural Progression. Another Juno nomination, two Much Music Video Award and two Canadian Radio Music Award nominations have followed. Their song “Oh My” was the winner in the 8th Annual Independent Music Awards for best rap/hip hop song. They have been called part of Vancouver’s hip hop renaissance and their music has been featured in a CBC radio documentary, films, TV shows and video games.
